How 'bout them Chicago Blackhawks? Predators-Blackhawks Preview.

By MATT BEARDMORE (STATS Writer)

The Chicago Blackhawks have clinched the top spot in the Western Conference. Next up is the league's best overall record.

Chicago will try to extend its winning streak to seven – and point streak to 10 – on Friday night when the visiting Nashville Predators take the ice for the first time since their franchise record-tying seventh straight loss eliminated them from playoff contention.

After clinching the Central Division title with Friday's 3-2 shootout win over Detroit, and defeating St. Louis and Dallas, the Blackhawks locked up the top spot in the West on Wednesday when second-place Anaheim lost 3-2 in overtime to Columbus.

The Blackhawks and Ducks could still end up tied with 70 points, but Chicago wins the tiebreaker by virtue of more regulation and overtime wins.

The Blackhawks are 8-0-1 since their last regulation defeat – 2-1 to Anaheim on March 29 – and are four points ahead of Pittsburgh for their first Presidents' Trophy since 1990-91. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews likes his team's chances, as it's riding its longest winning streak since a franchise-best 11-game run from Feb. 15-March 6 that capped off a league-record 24-game point streak to open the season.

"It does feel similar,'' said Toews, who netted his team-leading 21st goal in Monday's win over the Stars. "We're down a goal, we're up a goal, we find a way to come back and finish the job in the third period or even in overtime.

"We're hungry to play every single night. That's the No. 1 similarity. We're having fun.''

There's a far different feeling in the Predators dressing room after their postseason chances ended with Monday's 5-2 loss to Vancouver. Nashville had been to the postseason in seven of the last eight seasons, and was the only West team to advance to the semifinals in 2011 and 2012.

"We still have to play hard,'' captain Shea Weber said. "It's obviously tough. We have to find a way to battle here in the last games and try to get some wins.''

That could be asking a lot as the injury-plagued Predators, who are without Colin Wilson, Paul Gaustad and Gabriel Bourque for the rest of 2012-13, head to Chicago with one win in their last 11 games overall and one in 14 road contests.

The Blackhawks, 4-0-1 in their last five at the United Center, have won all four against Nashville this season, with three of those coming this month. Chicago coach Joel Quenneville still expects a tough divisional matchup as the Predators will try to prevent getting swept by the Blackhawks for the first time.

"They have some young kids (including 18-year-old center Filip Forsberg and 22-year-old defenseman Mattias Ekholm) that are going to be out there trying to try things, but we know one thing with Nashville – they play hard and it's not going to change their approach," he said.

The Blackhawks' need to make some changes on the power play. They've failed in 20 straight chances over the last nine games, which includes five opportunities in the three wins over Nashville.

Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford will face the Predators for a third time this season with Ray Emery day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Crawford has won his last three starts in this series.

Chicago has five straight wins over Nashville, with Patrick Kane leading the club with four goals and six points during that stretch.

Report: NHL eyes six outdoor games in 2014.

By The Sports Xchange

The NHL is planning to stage six outdoor games next season in football and baseball stadiums, ESPN.com and TSN reported Tuesday.

The league is finalizing the outdoor schedule, according to ESPN.com, that will start with the previously announced Winter Classic game on Jan. 1, 2014, in Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., between the
Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Other games are planned for Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Vancouver. A league announcement is expected in the next two weeks.

The Los Angeles game, which would be the first outdoors in California, would pit the
Anaheim Ducks against the Los Angeles on Jan. 25, 2014, in Dodger Stadium.

Two games would be played in Yankee Stadium in the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey. The
New York Rangers would play the New Jersey Devils on Jan. 26 and the New York Islanders on Jan. 29, according to ESPN.com.

The other outdoor games would involve the
Pittsburgh Penguins facing the Chicago Blackhawks? on March 1, 2014, in Soldier Field and the Vancouver Canucks playing host to the Ottawa Senators on March 2 at B.C. Place.

Federal investigators probing alleged $18 million scam involving NFL and NBA players. Please read this article and let us know, what's your take?

On the heels of regulators red-flagging a potential $18 million scam last week, multiple federal agencies are probing investments sold to NFL and NBA players, Yahoo! Sports has learned.

According to multiple sources that spoke to Yahoo! Sports on the condition of anonymity, several professional athletes have either been contacted or been urged to contact investigators from the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Three sources also told Yahoo! Sports that the NFL Players Association has asked a handful of its athletes with investments tied to Jade Management to contact FBI investigators. Jade previously managed finances for dozens of professional athletes, and had investment ties to Success Trade – a firm that came under fire from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) last week. Success Trade was ordered to halt fundraising last week after allegedly selling $18 million in fraudulent and unregistered promissory notes to 58 persons, many of whom were NFL and NBA players.

Jade Management founder Jinesh "Hodge" Brahmbhatt told Yahoo! Sports his firm had more than 30 athletes who purchased high interest investments that FINRA now says were fraudulent. Some of those investments purportedly generated interest returns between 11 and 26 percent. (With banks and financial institutions paying 1% to 3%, the red flags should have gone up immediately. If it sounds to good to be true, most of the time, it is!!!)

In a complaint filed by FINRA and obtained by Yahoo! Sports, regulators allege that multiple athletes involved with Success Trade were introduced to the fraudulent notes by representatives of Jade Management. Success Trade is alleged to have made at least $1.25 million in payments to Jade Management since March 2009.

During an 18-month investigation, Yahoo! Sports identified multiple athletes that purchased promissory notes from Success Trade. Among them were Detroit Pistons guard Brandon Knight, Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden, San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis and former Chicago Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye.

Brahmbhatt told Yahoo! Sports late last week that he had more than 30 clients who had purchased around $12 million worth of the fraudulent notes from Success Trade. Sources said those investments ranged anywhere from $50,000 to more than $500,000.

Late last week, Brahmbhatt sent an email to some of those clients indicating he was unsure whether they will get their money back.

"We have told [Success Trade CEO Fuad Ahmed] that what is most important is getting you paid back," Brahmbhatt said in his email to athletes. "We believe that this is what he is trying to do. It is not clear whether he will be able to accomplish this, given the FINRA action and a number of other hurdles."

Brahmbhatt said that while a number of his clients were involved with Success Trade deals, he maintained his company did not improperly benefit from those deals.

"I just hope nobody says, 'the guys at Jade capitalized on this,' " Brahmbhatt said. "Because we never did. Other than the first year we took [$1.25 million] from him … everything we did for him is because we actually liked it."

Brahmbhatt contended that he had no reason to believe Success Trade was acting improperly while drawing investor money, but added that he didn't have full knowledge of the company's financial practices.

"We don't have [Success Trade's] books," he said. "People say, 'Man, you're stupid. You should have looked at [Success Trade's] last two or three years of income statements.' But you know what? We didn't. You know why we didn't? Because he never missed a damn payment, and we never really thought about it."

"Since I've been in this business everyone said to me that [Jade Management was] running some kind of a pyramid scheme or a Ponzi scheme but I fought it tooth and [expletive] nail. I was like, 'Nope.' I thought people were just hating on us because … we were doing so well. … I'm [expletive] devastated, man. It's everything I worked for my whole life."

As of last week's release by FINRA, Brahmbhatt was registered in the financial advisors program established by the NFL Player's Association. Union spokesman George Atallah hasn't responded to multiple emails requesting comment on how long Brahmbhatt has been registered in the program or whether his status in the program is currently being reviewed.

CS&T/AA's Opinion: It's a shame what these sports agents and professional financial advisors do to these young athletes. These young men and women put all of their faith in them and then finish a professional career broke!!! Don't get me wrong, there are some great sports agents and professional financial advisors out there but then you have the unqualified, incompetent, inept, fake misrepresentations of agents that sell these young players and their families a bill of goods. Mismanagement, bad investments, excessive fees, etc. are common and these young people have never had money before, don't have any idea about financial management and end up being taken to the cleaners. Supposedly, the League and the Players Union insist that these agents meet some type of standards and if they don't, they should not allow them to represent the players. All I can say to these young men and women are to remember the old adage, "If you don't watch your money, someone's going to watch it for you." Spend the little extra, get a reputable financial representative and you won't go broke at the end of a fine career. Also, realize that as you mature, you'll have to let go of your posse and followers. I'm not saying you can't continue to be friends, however, you can't continue to take care of everyone. This simple advice sounds harsh but if you can't discipline yourself, you'll be just as much at fault as your agent and financial advisor for the financial condition you find yourself in. Fellow Diehards, I'd love to know, what you think, what's your take?

Tim Grover, Michael Jordan’s trainer, says the Flu Game was a poisoning case.

Of the many stories and events that add up to Michael Jordan's legend, few loom as large as the "Flu Game." In Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, with his Chicago Bulls facing a 3-2 deficit against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City, Jordan scored 38 points despite playing with extreme nausea and discomfort. The Bulls took the game 90-88, the series returned to Chicago, and Jordan ensured that fans would discuss his will to win for decades.

After nearly 16 years, it's still unclear if Jordan suffered from food poisoning or a stomach virus that night. Yet Tim Grover, Jordan's longtime trainer, is pretty sure that MJ was poisoned. From an interview with Henry Abbott for TrueHoop:

We were in Park City, Utah, up in a hotel. Room service stopped at like nine o'clock. He got hungry and we really couldn't find any other place to eat. So we said eh, the only thing I can find is a pizza place. So we says all right, order pizza.

We had been there for a while. Everybody knew what hotel. Park City was not many hotels back then. So everyone kind of knew where we were staying. So we order pizza.

Five guys came to deliver this pizza. I take the pizza and I tell them: "I've got a bad feeling about this. ... I've just got a bad feeling about this."

Out of everybody in the room, [MJ] was the only one who ate. Nobody else had it. And then 2 o'clock in the morning I get a call to my room. Come to the room. He's curled up in the fetal position. We're looking at him, finding the team physician at that time.
Immediately I told him it's food poisoning. Not the flu.

Outside of the more sensational aspects of the story, it's worth noting just how much NBA superstars' routines have changed in the last 15 years. In 2013, a player at the top of his profession would never have to order out for pizza — he'd have a chef cook something up or tell a personal attendant to rush out to grab food to avoid precisely this kind of situation. Yet Jordan, legitimately one of the most famous people in the world, had to call up a random Park City pizza joint to find something eat. It's hard to imagine.

Grover's story is fairly believable, but his certainty could just be the product of his particular circumstance. If everyone in Park City really did know where the Bulls were staying, then it's reasonable to assume that five people delivered the pizza because they all knew they might get the chance to meet Michael Jordan, an international superstar who typically doesn't hang out with pizza deliverers. In fact, it's likely that anyone who wished to poison a Bulls player would make sure not to raise suspicion by having an abnormal number of people deliver the pizza. Any change in standard procedure could reveal their plans.

That doesn't mean that Grover is wrong, and his perspective certainly adds a new level of interest to the Flu Game. I'm just not sure it clarifies the essential mystery of the game. It's another data point in a story that, by virtue of its sheer improbability and what it says about Jordan's abilities, should be a part of NBA lore for as long as we follow the league.

NASCAR drops hammer on Keselowski and Logano, penalizes Truex Jr. and Hornaday.

On Wednesday, NASCAR issued penalties to both Penske teams that could deal significant blows to the championship and Chase hopes of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

In separate decisions, NASCAR also handed down penalties against Martin Truex Jr. and Ron Hornaday.

The Penske teams' penalties were severe and long-reaching, and stemmed from violations of NASCAR's Sections 12-1; 12-4J and 20-12. Both teams' crew chiefs, car chiefs, engineers and competition directors were suspended for six races, including the All-Star Race in Charlotte. The crew chiefs were fined $100,000 apiece. And both teams lost 25 championship points, which drops Keselowski from 2nd to 4th and Logano from 9th to 14th place.

The penalties will cause considerable difficulty for both teams as they prepare for the Chase. While Keselowski, the defending champion, remains in solid shape to make the Chase, Logano was in the midst of his best season ever. Logano now finds himself outside the Chase, fighting for a highly competitive spot. Without the services of their crew chiefs, both teams will lose out on valuable prep time at Chase tracks, including Kansas, Talladega and Charlotte.

Truex's car failed post-race inspection, putting it in violation of Sections 12-1, 12-4J, and 20-12.8.1B. More specifically, the car failed to meet minimum height during the inspection. Truex lost six driver points and six owner points. Crew chief Chad Johnston was fined $25,000 and placed on probation until June 5.

Hornaday also received a 25-point penalty and a fine of $25,000 for wrecking Darrell Wallace Jr. under caution during Sunday's truck race at Rockingham. Hornaday was not suspended, which was the fine Kyle Busch received for wrecking Hornaday at Texas in 2011.

High school baseball game ‘a travesty’ after 65-0 score in 3 innings.

Words like “travesty” don’t usually apply to a high school baseball game. They do when the final score of that game is 65-0.

The Licking Heights baseball team topped a league foe 65-0 — USA TodayThe Licking Heights baseball team topped a league foe 65-0 — USA Today

As
first noted by the Newark Advocate, a newspaper in Ohio, and followed upon by Sporting News columnist Bill Bender, the Licking County (Oh.) Licking Heights High baseball team routed Columbus (Oh.) Harvest Prep High by a final score of 65-0. The game was halted after three innings, by which point Licking Heights already had accumulated 48 hits, 13 walks and a troubling 11 hit batsmen.

The Hornets
scored 16 runs in the first inning, 18 runs in the second and 31 in the third. Harvest Prep scored no runs at all.

"It's the most awkward I've ever felt in 34 years of coaching," Licking Heights coach Jeff Boyer told the Sporting News. "I didn't know what to feel. I wasn't happy. I felt bad for their kids and didn't know what to tell our kids."

Before anyone blame the state of Ohio for not having a mercy rule to halt such a game, it’s worth noting that it does. However, that rule
calls for games to end abruptly if one team holds a 10-run lead after five innings and does not have provisions for games that get far out of hand earlier. In the case of Licking Heights and Harvest Prep, the game was called after three innings because of encroaching darkness, not the astounding 65-0 score.

While there is no defending a 65-0 final score, it appears that Boyer tried – or offered to try -- just about every alternative at his disposal to minimize the damage. At one point Boyer claims he went to the game’s home plate umpire and offered to have his players bunt and then step on the plate to guarantee an out.

The umpire’s response to that possibility? Boyer made that clear, and hinted at its irony.

“… he said he didn't want it to be a travesty of a game. And I'm thinking, 'We're already there.' "

While the two teams will meet again on April 22, Boyer has made it clear that Licking Heights is committed to avoiding the kind of embarrassment that resulted from the teams’ first encounter. That’s all for the best for both teams, regardless of how responsible Licking Heights could possibly be for the eye-popping lopsided final score.
