13 Reasons You Need To Visit Chicago This Summer

Chicago is one of the Midwest's best cities, combining culture and history with modern style. Visit the places on this list during your next trip to the Windy City and we promise you'll never forget it.

1. The Beaches

What summer would be complete without a visit to the beach? Chicago boasts 26 miles of clean, public beaches alongside beautiful Lake Michigan. Soak up some sun or take a dip in the water during one of those hot Chicago days.

2. The Food

Home to the famous deep-dish pizza, Chicago holds its own when it comes to other food as well. If you're in the mood for something quick, then head to Portillo's for a Chicago-style hotdog filled with hot peppers, tomato and a pickle.

Whatever you are in the mood for, Chicago will satisfy any appetite.

3. Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs call Wrigley Field home, and have since 1907. Despite the countless losing seasons and poor postseason performances of the team, you will not find a better atmosphere in the MLB. Whether you are there to enjoy the game or just wanting to visit the second-oldest ballpark in baseball, Wrigley is a must-see.

4. The Beer

Beer and Chicago basically go hand in hand with each other. You can find great beer selections in bars across the city, or you can go straight to the source and visit one of the many breweries. Most breweries offer daily tours, as well as free samples of what's on tap.

You can't go wrong with free beer!

5. Taste Of Chicago

Every summer, Grant Park is host to the Taste of Chicago, the largest outdoor food festival in the world. Over the course of five days, you can enjoy live music, countless activities and of course, food!

Make sure you come hungry, as with over 200 different menu items from a variety of cuisines you'll be in food heaven.

6. Lakefront Trail

The Lakefront Trail gives you one of the best scenic views in town. Open to walkers, joggers and bikes, Lakefront's paved path spans 18 miles with Lake Michigan on one side and green parks on the other.

Use the trail to explore different neighborhoods or just pick a spot to relax and enjoy the view.

7. The Skyline

Just viewing the skyline in person is enough of a reason to visit Chicago. The Willis Tower, formerly named Sears Tower, was once the tallest building in the world. The Rookery Building may not be the tallest in the skyline, but it's definitely worth seeing due to its modern architecture.

Sometimes, all you need to do is take a step back and look up to experience something breathtaking.

8. Millennium Park

Host to dozens of free events, ranging from concerts to film screenings, Millennium Park is a great place to visit. Chicago's signature landmark, "The Bean," is located in the park and is a year-round attraction.

Covering 25 acres, exploring Millennium Park is a great way to spend the afternoon.

9. Navy Pier

Navy Pier is a massive playground for entertainment, museums, restaurants and shopping. Take a ride on the 150-foot Ferris wheel, a year-round attraction which offers great views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline.

Or if movies are more your thing, enjoy a flick on the largest IMAX screen in the city. Navy Pier offers you a little bit of everything.

10. The Shopping

Chicago is home to some of the biggest names in fashion. "The Magnificent Mile" boasts plenty of high-end brands, such as Hugo Boss, Burberry and many others. If you aren't looking to spend a fortune, there are also many strip malls throughout the city to visit.

It all looks tempting, but don't spend all your money in one place!

11. The Neighborhoods

Primarily, Chicago is split up in to either North, South, West or Downtown, but within those sections are 77 different neighborhoods. West side is more of the melting pot of the city, featuring Greek, Mexican and Puerto Rican communities, while Downtown gives you more of the tourist attractions.

Watch the Cubs play ball in the North, or make a trip to the South side if you're a White Sox fan. Any section you go to, you will experience a different feel of the city.

 12. The Music Festivals

Music fans will definitely want to visit the city during the summer. Located in Grant Park, Lollapalooza is one of the largest music festivals in the country. Lollapalooza features top artists from different genres spread out over a three day period.

With over 10 different festivals during the summer, you should have no problem rocking out to your favorite music.

13. The Museums

Chicago is home to over 50 great museums. Ranging from cultural to botanical, you will be able to find just about anything you want to learn about. While visiting Field Museum, take some time to say hello to Sue, the largest, most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex ever discovered.

Or if art is what you like, take a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago and get lost in some of the best Impressionist art in the country.
