"After all these years, it's still embarrassing for me to play on the American golf tour. Like the time I asked my caddy for a sand wedge and he came back ten minutes later with a ham on rye." ~ Chi Chi Rodriguez, Puerto Rican Professional Golfer, on his accent.

Congratulations to the 2013 NCAA Basketball Champions, Cardinals rule: Louisville rallies for title.

By David Purdum, The Sports Xchange

This is our first blog since the Championship game, we had to post an article on this terrific game!!! CS&T/AA

Michigan v Louisville

Louisville took Michigan's best shot and survived. The Cardinals are the 2013 NCAA champions.

Senior point guard Peyton Siva and tournament star Luke Hancock each had dynamic games, leading Louisville, the No. 1 overall seed, to an 82-76 win over the fourth-seeded Wolverines.

Siva dazzled with his ball-handling and slashing ability. He finished with 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Hancock lit it up from outside, connecting on all five of his 3-point attempts. The junior guard/forward made eight of 10 3-pointers in two Final Four games and was named the most outstanding player.

"It doesn't get better than this, it's unbelievable," he said.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino, a part of the 2013 Basketball Hall of Fame class, becomes the first coach to win a national championship at two different schools. He guided Kentucky to the 1996 title.

Pitino also will be sporting his first tattoo, something he promised his team back in February if they won it all.

"They said if you win the national championship, Coach, you are getting a tattoo," Pitino said during the postgame celebration. "I said, 'Hell, yeah, I am getting a tattoo.'"

A crowd of 74,326, a record for an NCAA final, was treated to a fantastic back-and-forth game that capped what was considered a down year for college basketball. Stars and unheralded reserves for both teams hit big shots. There were alley-oop dunks, collisions at the rim and 16 3-pointers, fueling an electric atmosphere at the Georgia Dome.

Hancock's last 3-pointer put Louisville up by 10 with 3:13 to play. Michigan got back to within 78-74 with 50.1 seconds to play, but the Cardinals hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal the school's first national championship since 1986 and third overall.

National player of the year Trey Burke was terrific for Michigan, despite early foul trouble that limited his playing time in the first half. So was his backup, freshman Michael "Spike" Albrecht, who had 17 points, all in a remarkable first-half performance.

Burke finished with a game-high 24 for the Wolverines.

"We fought for 40 minutes," said Burke, a junior, who declined to answer questions about whether he'd declare for the NBA Draft. "There was never a point in time that we gave up."

Louisville started to take control early in the second half. Russ Smith's corner 3-pointer put the Cardinals up 52-46 with 13 minutes to go.

Pitino shuffled players in and out throughout the game, and Louisville's relentless pressure seemed to wear down Michigan in the second half. However, fouls mounted on the Cardinals. Michigan was in the double bonus for the game's final 4 1/2 minutes. It didn't matter. Louisville just had too many weapons.

Hancock finished with 22 points, and Chane Behanan added 15 for the Cardinals (35-5), who end the season on a 16-game win streak.

Burke started hot, scoring the Wolverines' first seven points, but he picked up his second foul with 11 minutes left in the first half. Enter Albrecht, a freshman reserve whose season high was seven points. He hit all four of his 3-point attempts.

Albrecht's weaving layup put Michigan up 33-21 and forced Pitino to call timeout with 3:51 to play in the first half.

The Cardinals responded with a 14-3 run, with all of Louisville's points coming from Hancock. He hit four 3-pointers in a two-minute span.

After leading by 12 with just under four minutes left in the first half, Michigan (31-8) went to the locker room up just 38-37.

"We were rolling there in the first half, but Louisville went on a good run," Albrect said. "I felt really good going into the second half. Unfortunately, we fell a bit short."

The win caps an emotional run for the Cardinals, who were brought to tears earlier in the tournament when key reserve Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome leg injury in an Elite Eight win over Duke.

Ware joined the postgame celebration on the court with his teammates and even got to cut down a piece of the net.

"It is not about me," Ware said. "Our team came out here and beat a great Michigan team. These are my brothers. They got the job done, and I'm am so proud of them."

NOTES: The two-day Final Four attendance of 149,676 set an all-time record, breaking the previous mark of 145,797 set at Reliant Stadium in Houston in 2011. ... Ex-Michigan star Chris Webber was in attendance, sitting next to his former Wolverines teammates Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard. ... Pitino is the fifth coach to take two different schools to the national championship game. ... The teams combined to shoot 48.1 percent from the field in the first half, including 57.8 percent from the 3-point arc. Louisville finished at 45.9 percent overall, 50 percent on 3-pointers. Michigan hit 52.1 percent of its shots, 44.4 percent of its 3s. ... Pitino improved to 6-0 in the Georgia Dome.

How 'bout them Chicago Blackhawks? Hossa, Emery carry Blackhawks to 1-0 win over Wild, on and on.....

By DAVE CAMPBELL (AP Sports Writer)

Patrick Sharp rejoined the Chicago Blackhawks machine as if he was never gone. Marian Hossa
provided the welcome-back gift.

Hossa's unassisted goal late in the second period lifted the NHL-leading Blackhawks to their fifth win in six games, 1-0 over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night.

Ray Emery started for the Blackhawks for the third straight game and made 20 saves for his second shutout in that stretch and third of the season. He helped hand the Wild their fifth loss in seven games.

''We feel pretty good about our team,'' Hossa said. ''Right now, we've got a fifth line out there with some great players, and they don't get in the lineup. I think we're pretty strong up front. Our defense played great, and Ray's played unreal the last three games.''

Hossa looked like a Bears defensive back jumping in front of a wide receiver's route when he darted in front of Clayton Stoner's seemingly harmless breakout pass toward Mikko Koivu in the Wild zone. Hossa intercepted the bouncing pass in front of the blue line, skated up the middle and snapped a shot past goalie Niklas Backstrom's stick with 4:46 left before the second intermission.

''Sometimes we try to use our instincts,'' Hossa said, adding: ''I was at the spot, the timing was right and the puck hit me basically on the tape. Even though he put a really hard pass across, I had lots to do to catch that. I tried to release it so quick.''

That was Hossa's first goal since March 16 at Dallas. He missed six games in that scoreless stretch because of an upper body injury, but Hossa is still second on the team with 14 goals.

''I pride myself on trying to play mistake free, and that was a costly one,'' Stoner said. ''I feel bad for letting the team down.''

The Blackhawks enjoyed an even bigger boost when Sharp returned from a 14-game absence due to a shoulder injury. Chicago went 4-5 over those first nine games without Sharp before getting back on track, but the league's top-scoring team is equipped with enough exceptional skill on its forward lines that it didn't miss much of a beat.

''I think we've got a pretty good thing going here right now,'' Sharp said. ''I was just happy to get back in the swing of things with the team. It's a great team to be a part of. Awesome guys off the ice. They make you feel welcome right away. So it was great to be out there. I think we're a good team, with or without me.''

The first team in the NHL this season to clinch a spot in the playoffs, the Blackhawks outshot the Wild 31-20 to move one step closer to securing the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

They are five points ahead of second-place Anaheim and have a game in hand over the Ducks. The Blackhawks (30-5-4) are 16-2-2 on the road, by far the best mark in the league.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville gave Emery the start again over Corey Crawford. He said Crawford is 100 percent healthy. The way his team has been playing, though, picking the wrong goalie would be hard to do.

''I think there's a lot of confidence, and we're excited for whoever is in net,'' said star Patrick Kane. ''I think right now we're pretty confident in our team. Just try to keep getting better.''

The Wild (22-15-2) put themselves in prime position for a spot in the postseason for the first time in five years by going a franchise-best 11-4 in March, but they are far from safe with just a five-point edge over ninth-place Dallas and Columbus. Six of the Wild's final nine games are against teams currently below the playoff cut.

''We've still got some pretty good players here,'' Wild star Zach Parise said. ''We should be able to get some sustained pressure. We did the other night in Columbus. But that's a team that plays really well defensively. I think they've given up the least amount of shots. It's tough to get anything consistently going.''

They had their chances, particularly when Cal Clutterbuck got his rebound attempt behind Emery but not enough to nudge it past the goal line. Clutterbuck's second swing missed, and Emery gained control.

The Wild's biggest blow came before the game when they learned right wing Dany Heatley, third on the team with 11 goals, will miss the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs following surgery on his left shoulder.

''You've got to get through it. Good teams can step up,'' right wing Devin Setoguchi said.

NOTES: Wild C Zenon Konopka's clearing pass landed in an unusual place, on Quenneville's head. The puck bounced off the glass behind the bench before hitting Quenneville, who laughed as he rubbed his gray hair after the harmless blow. ... The Blackhawks are 6-0-3 against the Wild in the last nine meetings. ... Koivu hasn't scored in seven games and hasn't recorded a point in five games. ... The Wild were also without C Matt Cullen (lower body) for the fourth straight game. ... The Blackhawks scratched C Dave Bolland (lower body) for the third straight game. Quenneville wasn't ready to commit to his return on Friday against Detroit.

Ump admits ending mistake, Rangers beat Rays 5-4.

By STEPHEN HAWKINS (AP Sports Writer)

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon knew it was ball four to Ben Zobrist, who was already headed toward first base. Even Texas Rangers closer Joe Nathan expected that would be the call after his full-count pitch.

Except plate umpire Marty Foster called a game-ending third strike - one he later admitted was wrong.

Nathan mouthed ''Wow!'' when the strike was called to wrap up his 300th career save, which along with the Rangers' 5-4 victory stood despite Foster's postgame admission late Monday night.

''That kind of call cannot occur. I don't even want to say under those circumstances,'' Maddon said.

''The last inning, the last out of the game. I'm not even going to go there. That call can't be made in a Major League Baseball game.''

The last pitch, a curveball, was low and outside. Zobrist put both hands on his helmet and took it off in disbelief while Maddon quickly came out and argued with the umpires for several minutes, even standing in front of them at the gate where they exit the field.

''I saw the pitch and of course don't have the chance to do it again,'' Foster told a pool reporter after the game. ''But had I had a chance to do it again, I wouldn't call that pitch a strike.''

A.J. Pierzynski, the new Rangers catcher who was once traded for Nathan, said he heard Foster call strike, and went out to congratulate his teammate on becoming the 24th major leaguer with 300 saves.

''Did I draw it up like this for my 300th (save)? No. But we'll take it,'' Nathan said. ''I knew I was throwing it there. The fact is I thought it was ball four. I thought he might offer at it. When he didn't, my mindset went more to concentrate on what we've got to do with (Evan) Longoria now. I think I might have been the last guy on the field to realize the game was over.''

Nathan's milestone save was his second this year, and 39th in two seasons with the Rangers. He had 260 saves for the Twins and one for San Francisco before being traded by the Giants to Minnesota after the 2003 season for Pierzynski.

After the Rays scored twice in the eighth off two relievers, Nathan came on to start the ninth. The 38-year-old right-hander allowed a two-out RBI single to Sean Rodriguez, who was still on base with Longoria (3 for 3 with a walk) on deck when strike three was called.

''Umpires make mistakes just like players do. It was a tough time to have a bad call,'' Zobrist said. ''I hope it doesn't ending up costing us playoffs in the end. I know it's the first week of the season. But every win is important and we might have had a chance to win that one. Everybody makes mistakes.

What are you going to do?''

Start fresh on Tuesday in the second game of the three-game set, the only time the teams play until mid-September.

Foster said Maddon was very professional.

''He was frustrated and I understand,'' Foster said. ''He acted probably the best he can under that situation.''

Umpire crew chief Tim Welke indicated that he didn't foresee a scenario in which Maddon would be disciplined.

Maddon said he ''saw it clearly'' when it happened, but looked at a replay afterward ''to reaffirm what I'd seen. Again, it just can't happen in a Major League Baseball game.''

After Pierzynski's first homer for Texas, a two-out solo shot in the fourth that made it 2-1, Mitch Moreland pulled a 428-foot shot deep into the Texas bullpen in right-center field.

Elvis Andrus, in a 2-for-18 slide before singling in the fifth, added a two-run single in the Rangers seventh for a 5-1 lead.

Alexi Ogando (2-0) allowed only one run on three hits, but needed 89 pitches to get through 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander walked three and struck out two five days after getting a career-high 10 strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings at Houston.

Joe Ortiz, the 22-year-old rookie lefty who is only 5-foot-7, got out of a two-on jam relieving Ogando with a pair of grounders and then worked a 1-2-3 seventh.

Jeremy Hellickson (0-1), starting on his 26th birthday for Tampa Bay, gave up three runs and five hits over five innings. He needed 30 pitches to get out of the first, including a nine-pitch leadoff walk by Ian Kinsler, and threw 98 pitches overall.

NOTES: Hellickson pitched on his birthday for the second year in a row. On his 25th birthday, his 2012 debut, he pitched 8 2-3 scoreless innings in the Rays' 3-0 win over the New York Yankees. ... Pierzynski became the seventh different player to homer for the Rangers in their seven games. ... Tampa Bay's first error of the season came in the second when 2B Zobrist was unable to snag Pierzynski's grounder. ... Longoria has 10 hits this season, all singles. This is the furthest he's gone into a season without hitting a home run.

Why’s the NCAA basketball court elevated?

By Jay Busbee

When you tuned into Monday night's NCAA basketball championship, whether because you love the strains of "One Shining Moment" or because you're one of those lucky few whose bracket is still clinging to life, you'll notice that the players are running up and down a court that appears to be two feet higher than the surrounding floor. It's a strange effect, particularly when the camera catches bench players looking like they're sitting at the kids' table at Thanksgiving.

In the case of the Final Four, the reason for the elevated court, which sits 27 inches off the floor, is both aesthetic and financial. There's an obvious challenge to staging a basketball game, with its 4,700 square feet of court, on a space designed for a football field, with its 45,000 square feet. Seat rows in the Georgia Dome and similar gargantuan arenas aren't designed to slope to what would, in effect, be the 35-yard-line on each side of the field. So while most court arrangements in domes force the NCAA to use only half the arena (as happened last year in the regional final in the Georgia Dome), the elevated court allows the NCAA to situate the court in the center of the arena and sell thousands more tickets.

The practical result, however, is that the slope is so gentle that anybody who stands up, whether to cheer or escape for a beverage, sets off a reverse-domino effect behind them: two have to stand in the next row, three in the row behind them, and so on. The bulbous heads of the assembled sports media along the court also block a portion of the standard-level court from television cameras. You see? The NCAA is taking care of you, the viewer!

Several gyms around the country, including floors at Vanderbilt and Minnesota, have employed elevated courts for years. However, the elevated court in NCAA tournament play dates to 2008, when the Midwest regional final at Ford Field in Detroit, a dome with sight lines similar to the Georgia Dome, first experimented with the idea. And to date, there are no reports of injuries from players flying off the edge of the stage.

This arrangement isn't likely to change anytime soon. With next year's Final Four slated for Cowboys Stadium, the court is going to look like a postage stamp in the middle of an auditorium.

There's going to be a Party in the Poconos, NASCAR style.

The June 9 Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway will be named the Party in the Poconos 400 following the results of a fan vote sponsored by Walmart.

Walmart teamed up with Pocono Raceway to offer fans a chance to suggest names and vote via Walmart's local Facebook page. They can also name a signature concession. Fans will have the opportunity to vote between three different types of pierogies, starting April 9.

Walmart partnered with the track to offer $25 tickets for all concourse level tickets for the June 9 race. The track made 16,000 seats available at the price.

More than 1,600 races names were suggested, including the ''I hope Brad Wins! 400,'' submitted by reigning Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski.

UConn overwhelms Louisville to claim eighth title under Geno Auriemma.

By Kyle Ringo

Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma joined his legendary Tennessee rival Pat Summitt at the top of the heap in women's basketball Tuesday night when his Huskies dominated Louisville to win the program's eighth national championship.

Auriemma tied Summitt's record of eight titles thanks to some torrid shooting by the Huskies, who took a commanding lead in the first half and never faded in New Orleans Arena. UConn ran away with a 93-60 victory in an uncompetitive championship game that stood in stark contrast to one of the best men's title games in recent memory played Monday between Louisville and Michigan.

The UConn women prevented Louisville from becoming the second school in history to win both the men's and women's national basketball titles in the same season. Connecticut won both championships in 2004.

It was the largest margin of victory in the history of the women's championship game. UConn has beaten Louisville 12 consecutive times dating back to 1993. Auriemma is only two championships shy of tying legendary UCLA coach John Wooden for the most titles won by any coach at the major college level.

"The fact that I tied Pat Summitt's record, that puts you in a category of the greatest women's basketball coach that ever lived," Auriemma said in his interview immediately after the Huskies were handed the championship trophy. "I'm thrilled for our seniors. This team accomplished an amazing feat this last month."

Connecticut (35-4) made 13 of 26 3-point shots and raced to a 19-point halftime lead. The Huskies eventually stretched the lead to 35 points.

Freshman Breanna Stewart scored 23 points for UConn with nine rebounds and was one of five Huskies to register double figures in scoring. Stewart was named the Most Outstanding Player. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis made five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.

Louisville (29-9) provided the biggest upset of the women's tournament by beating the 2012 national champion Baylor and Brittney Griner. But the magic that came together for the Cardinals in that game didn't materialize Tuesday against the Huskies.

Louisville led 14-10 in the early going but managed to score only 15 points in the final 14 minutes of the first half. Meanwhile the Huskies exploded with 38 points in that span. The Cardinals shot 37 percent from the field in the game, made just five of 23 shots from behind the arc while being outrebounded by 19.

Sophomore Sara Hammond was the only Louisville player to score in double figures. She finished with 15 points.
