How 'bout them Chicago Blackhawks? So much for the Chicago Slump!!! Toews, Hossa lead Blackhawks' 8-1 rout of Stars.

The Associated Press

Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa each scored twice in leading the Chicago Blackhawks to an 8-1 rout of the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Nick Leddy and Patrick Kane each had a goal and two assists as eight Blackhawks scored two or more points and Chicago boosted its road record to 12-1-2 with a dominant win on the second stop of a four-game road trip.

Corey Crawford made 18 saves for his 13th victory. Johnny Oduya and Duncan Keith had the Blackhawks' other goals.

Defenseman
Trevor Daley scored for the Stars, who have been outscored 16-3 in losing four straight (0-3-1). The Stars will play nine of their next 11 at home, where they have lost three in a row and are 2-5-1 in their last nine.

The return of offensive catalyst Jamie Benn, who missed two games with a wrist injury, wasn't enough to help the Stars, although he assisted on Dallas only goal, feeding Daley for a one-timer on a power play at 6:30 of the third period to spoil Crawford's shutout bid.

Kari Lehtonen took the loss in goal for Dallas, surrendering four goals on 17 shots before he was pulled midway through the second period. Richard Bachman made 13 saves in relief.

Toews struck twice within 1:35 to propel Chicago to a 2-0 lead in the first period and the Blackhawks never looked back.

At 9:05, Toews cruised through the top of the crease and his nifty deflection of Leddy's slap shot from the left point beat Lehtonen.

His second goal came seconds after he won an offensive zone face-off, and set up in front of the net, where
Duncan Keith's point shot ricocheted off Daley right to him for an easy tap-in into the open side of the net at 10:40.

The Blackhawks extended their lead to 3-0 on Leddy's third goal of the season at 17:54. Lehtonen stopped Viktor Stalberg's point-blank shot, but Leddy managed to jam home the rebound.

Chicago continued to control the action in the second, nearly going up by four at 7:30 when a turnover by Dallas rookie defender Brenden Dillon gave Jimmy Hayes an uncontested wrist shot from the slot, but he fired it over the crossbar.

Oduya made it 4-0 at 8:01 when his slap shot from the blue line sailed past a screened Lehtonen, pinged off the left post and dropped in for his second goal in as many games.

That goal prompted Stars coach Glen Gulutzan to pull Lehtonen in favor of Bachman.

The Blackhawks scored on their first shot against Bachman, taking a 5-0 lead at 12:18 while the clubs were skating four aside, on Hossa's one-timer from in front off a nifty backhand pass from Kane.

Skating with a 5-on-3 advantage, Chicago struck again with 50.8 seconds left in the period when Hossa launched a blistering snap shot from the right circle that beat Bachman over his glove.

Keith's second goal of the year, off a wrist shot that glanced off Benn's stick in front, beat Bachman at 2:06 of the final period.

Two minutes after Daley snapped the shutout in the third period, another Dallas goal was wiped out when Eric Nystrom's wrist shot found its way over Crawford's shoulder, but the officials ruled that Vernon Fiddler interfered with Crawford on the play.

Kane made it 8-1 on the ensuing power play with a spin move in the right circle for a backhander that beat Bachman past the glove at 9:59.

NOTES: Daley's goal snapped an 0-for-10 power play drought for the Stars over the past three games. ... After a 2-for-6 showing with the man-advantage, Chicago is now 5 for 21 over its last nine contests on the power play. ... The Stars honored their general manager, former C Joe Nieuwendyk, as part of their all-time team. Nieuwendyk played in Dallas from 1995-2002, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1999 while helping the Stars earn the franchise's only Stanley Cup.

Thanks, Dad!: Bruce Bochy informs son Brett he’s been cut from Giants roster over dinner.

By

Nobody was expecting Bruce Bochy's son Brett to crack the San Francisco Giants opening day roster this year. In fact, at 25 years old, he may be a long shot to ever get that call since he's not really regarded as a top prospect and he's yet to discard the durability questions that have surrounded him since he was drafted in 2010.

Still, it can't be all that good a feeling when the official word comes down that your dream to pitch in the big leagues won't be happening as soon as you'd hoped. And it has to be an extra awkward feeling when the person informing you that you've fallen short is your own father.

That was the unfortunate case for the younger Bochy on Thursday night, though his father did take a different route to informing him than he would for any of his other players and According to Andrew Baggarly of Comcast Sports Net San Francisco, he actually did it in a face-to-face meeting over dinner, which may or may not have added to the awkwardness, but it certainly didn't take away from the disappointment.
“He was disappointed I didn’t bring him in (the office) to cut him,” the manager said, smiling. “Maybe I’ll do it tomorrow to make him feel better.”
I'm sure hearing the message one time will be plenty, but one can certainly understand why young Brett would want to learn his fate in the same manner as his teammates. It's difficult enough being the son of a coach or manager in any environment. I can only imagine how it would feel in a major league clubhouse, and being treated differently in any way can only make that feeling more awkward.

However, as things turn out, there really was a good reason why Bruce Bochy elected to go that route aside from being a good father attempting to brace his son for the 'bad news' (which is he'll be reassigned to Giants minor league camp). The skipper actually a full plate ahead of him on Friday as San Francisco had elected to cut an additional 20 players that day. Bochy was concerned he may not have time to get around to all of them, so he took advantage of the situation to work ahead a little bit.

Now, as for how Brett performed this spring: Unfortunately he was limited to just three appearances due to inflammation in his pitching elbow. I guess that would support the concern over his durability. He posted a 6.75 ERA during that time but says he learned a lot from pitching coach Dave Righetti that he can use going forward. That was his big takeaway from spending camp with the big league Giants.

For Bruce, though, it was much simpler.
“You spend so much time away from your kids when you’re in baseball, and here he was every day,” Bruce Bochy said. “Just watching him pitch, go through the drills … he worked hard to get here and to this point, so I was very proud of him.”

Heat pull away from Raptors, win 22nd straight.

By IAN HARRISON (Associated Press)

Back where their winning streak started on Super Bowl Sunday, the Miami Heat kept rolling right into March Madness.

Now it's on to Boston to face the rival Celtics - the team who ended the last streak this long.

The Heat equaled the second-longest winning streak in NBA history, pulling away in the fourth quarter Sunday to beat the Toronto Raptors 108-91 for their 22nd consecutive victory.

''It's a special ride right now that we're on,'' LeBron James said. ''The best thing about it is we're doing it together.''

James had 22 points and 12 rebounds for his career-best 32nd double-double of the season, Dwyane Wade had 24 points and nine assists, and Ray Allen scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for the defending NBA champions.

Chris Bosh finished with 18 points as the Heat matched the 22 consecutive wins recorded by the 2007-08 Houston Rockets. The NBA's longest streak is 33 games, set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

Miami will try to move into sole possession of second on Monday when it visits the Celtics - who ended the Rockets' run five years ago and have won 11 in a row at home.

''If there's any group that would be motivated in a circumstance like this, it's that team in green,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. ''I don't know if the streak will be a big factor but they love playing against us, and vice versa. That's what happens when you meet a team consecutively in the playoffs. There's a history there, and that's what makes these games special.''

The Heat have faced the Celtics twice so far this season. They blew out Boston 120-107 in Miami on opening night, then lost 100-98 in double-overtime on the road on Jan. 27, the day Boston learned that Rajon Rondo needed knee surgery.

''They played better than us for a large part of that game,'' Spoelstra said.

Winners of two straight, the Celtics may be without veteran forward Kevin Garnett on Monday. The 15-time All-Star sat out Saturday's victory over Charlotte with a strained left thigh and is day-to-day.

''We have to treat them with the respect they deserve,'' Spoelstra said. ''Regardless of who plays for them, that's a team that will come out with an incredible amount of urgency.''

Wade called the looming matchup with Boston ''a great challenge.''

''I think we'll be ready for it,'' he said. ''We've got to get our rest and we've got to know we're going to have a dog fight on our hands.''

Heat forward Shane Battier, who played on the 2007-08 Rockets, inspired his teammates with a speech after their Feb. 3 win over Toronto. The 11-year veteran spoke again after Sunday's victory, an address that Spoelstra called ''passionate'' and ''pure.''

''Coach Riley gets paid close to six figures for his speeches,'' Spoelstra said, referring to former Heat coach and current team president Pat Riley. ''I don't know what Shane should charge now, but he should get something.''

Miami blew it open Sunday behind Allen's 3-point shooting after Toronto tied it at 77 early in the fourth quarter.

''Those (3-pointers) are what we feared for so many years (when Allen was with Boston),'' Spoelstra said. ''He can turn a game around just like that.''

Toronto is the third team with multiple losses to the Heat during the streak. Miami has beaten Philadelphia three times and Atlanta twice.

''You talk about a well-oiled machine, those guys are efficient both offensively and defensively,'' Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. ''They do it in a classy way. They are well put together.''

Rudy Gay scored 27 and Amir Johnson had 18 points and 18 rebounds as the Raptors lost their 11th straight against Miami, extending their longest active losing streak against a single opponent.

''We just ran out of gas,'' Johnson said.

Jonas Valanciunas scored 18 points, and Terrence Ross and DeMar DeRozan each had 12 for the Raptors, whose last victory over the Heat was a 111-103 home win on Jan. 27, 2010 - when Bosh still played for Toronto and James was in Cleveland.

Toronto tied it at 77 on a pair of free throws by Gay less than a minute into the fourth but, even with James on the bench, Miami answered immediately. Allen hit a jumper, Norris Cole threw a half-court lob pass to Wade for an alley-oop dunk and Allen made a 3-pointer, giving Miami an 84-77 lead.

''It was a perfect pass,'' Wade said. ''I don't really show a lot of emotions nowadays too much, but I got a little pumped up after that one.''

After a Raptors timeout, Chris Andersen converted a three-point play and Wade made two free throws, capping a 12-0 run that put the Heat up 89-77 with 7:42 left.

James scored eight points and Bosh had seven in the first and Miami closed the quarter with an 8-2 run to lead 27-19 after one.

A layup from Bosh gave Miami a 49-33 lead with 2:37 left in the half. Toronto closed the gap with a 6-0 run, but a 3 by James with less than 3 seconds left put the Heat up 55-43 at the break.

Miami called timeout at 6:49 of the third after a layup by DeRozan cut it to 66-59, but Bosh answered with a 3 from the corner, restoring Miami's double-digit advantage.

Toronto fought back again in the final minutes of the third. After a dunk by Gay, DeRozan converted a three-point play with 1:52 left, making it 76-69. DeRozan, who missed 10 of his first 12 shots, made two jumpers in the final 1:14 as the Raptors cut it to 76-73 heading into the fourth.

NOTES: James narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with eight assists. ... The Raptors outrebounded the Heat 51-26. ... Toronto has lost five straight home meetings with Miami. ... Former Raptor Morris Peterson attended the game.

A not-so-perfect 10 for John Daly.

By DOUG FERGUSON (AP Golf Writer)

John Daly at least was proud of a beautiful pitch from 30 yards to a foot of the cup.

It allowed him to limit the damage to a 10.

Whatever hopes Daly had of making the cut Friday in the Tampa Bay Championship ended early in his second round when he made a 10 on the par-4 third hole at Innisbrook. He hooked his 4-iron hybrid into the trees and decided to pitch out toward the fairway.

That was his mistake.

''As soon as you make that decision,'' he said, ''you can't go back to the tee.''

His second shot clipped a tree and went backward into bushes and grass so deep he had to take a penalty drop. His fourth shot hit another tree and went back to where it was, only this time he thought he could play it. Daly didn't pull off that shot, and then took another penalty drop. He barely got out into the rough with his seventh shot, and then knocked his eighth shot to about 30 yards short of the green.

''Beautiful chip,'' Daly said.

It was the 15th time Daly has made at least a 10 on one hole - at least on the PGA Tour.

He was headed for a record number in the Australian Open in 2011 until he ran out of golf balls on the par-5 11th hole. He would have been playing his 16th shot.

Daly has made at least a 10 in every major except the Masters, the most famous coming at the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 when he swatted a moving ball on the eighth hole of the final round and made an 11. He also made a 14 on the 18th hole at Pebble Beach in the 2000 U.S. Open by hitting one ball out-of-bounds, three into the ocean and one shot left-handed against the sea wall.

His most famous big number came at the Bay Hill Invitational in 1998 when he hit 3-wood into the water six times on the par-5 sixth hole in the final round and took an 18. Daly bounced back with a birdie on the next hole.

This was more of a risky decision to play through the trees.

It was similar to when Kevin Na made 16 two years ago in the Texas Open from thicket bushes that left him no chance to take a reasonable drop. A year ago, Charlie Wi took a 13 on the fifth hole at Innisbrook when three shots hit a tree and caromed out-of-bounds onto the range. Last year at Doral, Sergio Garcia hit four balls into the water on the par-4 third hole and took 12 in the final round.

Daly is in good company.

He just seems to ring up big numbers more than anyone else. At the end of his round, he missed a 30-inch putt and shot 81. After a brief interview, he walked over to the a few dozen fans and signed autographs.
